The highly anticipated Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie, a highlight of Cape Town’s event calendar, returns to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, 14 December 2024. This vibrant event blends the excitement of premier horseracing with the rich cultural heritage of the Cape, creating a unique celebration for both racing enthusiasts and fans of local traditions. The centerpiece of the day is the prestigious R2 million Gr 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, a thrilling showcase of South African horseracing excellence.

The Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie offers a vibrant preview of the 2025 Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade – Africa’s largest cultural festival, set for Saturday, 4 January 2025. Featuring 20 Minstrel Troupes from the Kaapse Klopse Karnivaal Association, the event showcases their dazzling new attire, members, and choreographed routines. More than a preview, the Voorsmakie celebrates the rich history and cultural significance of the century-old Tweede Nuwe Jaar tradition, now known as the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade. It’s a powerful tribute to Cape Town’s heritage and the strong community spirit that defines this iconic festival.

The day kicks off with one of the country’s most prestigious horseracing events, the R2 million Gr 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, a classic mile race renowned for spotlighting future stars of the track. Now in its third year of sponsorship by Hollywoodbets, the 2024 edition has drawn immense anticipation and top-tier talent and has attracted entries from across north and south headed up by boom colt, One Stripe, winner of the Gr 2 Cape Punters Cup three weeks earlier and the unbeaten Heather’s Boy from the Mike de Kock yard.

The undercard features some high-quality races too, with the Gr 3 Ridgemont Peninsula Handicap and the Gr 3 SplashOut Victress Stakes. Promising two-year-olds will appear in the Pragmatic Commonwealth Plate and the Flash Summer Coronation Plate adding to the attraction of the day.

The Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas is widely regarded as South Africa’s premier classic race. It features as the headliner of the Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie and is the third of eight featured raceday events in the Cape Racing Summer Festival of Racing. The mile classic has a long and proud history dating back to 1955, when it was run as the Cape of Good Hope Guineas. Over the years, it has served as a launchpad for champions and stallion-makers alike, with modern-day winners including the likes of Horse Chestnut, Jet Master, Captain Al, Variety Club, Capetown Noir, and Charles Dickens, to name just a few. While fillies generally don’t have an outstanding record in the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, a few outstanding female gallopers have triumphed over the years, adding to the race’s rich history.

Donovan Everitt, Chief Operating Officer of Cape Racing, shared his excitement about the event’s unique blend of racing and culture: “The Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie is one of the most anticipated events on the Cape Town calendar. Not only does it offer world-class horseracing, but it also celebrates the heart of our city’s heritage. The infectious rhythm and vibrant costumes of the Kaapse Klopse bring people together in a way few other events can. It’s a true Cape Town experience, where culture and sport unite to create something truly special.”

While horseracing takes center stage, the Voorsmakie also features a lively market with more than 30 family-friendly stalls and food vendors, creating a bustling atmosphere filled with Cape Town’s best offerings. Guests can enjoy an array of entertainment, including kiddies’ activations such as inflatable rides, obstacle courses, face painting, and games, ensuring a memorable experience for families. Throughout the day, Kaapse Klopse troupes will perform, adding to the festive energy that defines this unique event.

The Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie culminates with the Klopse march, promising an electrifying spectacle and setting the stage for an unforgettable afternoon. Entry to the Voorsmakie is free through Computicket, ensuring that this amazing celebration of Cape Town’s culture is accessible to everyone.

“We are thrilled to be back for the third consecutive year as the title sponsor of the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas and proud to support this incredible event,” said Brand and Communications Manager, Devin Heffer.  “The Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie is not just about horseracing; it’s a true reflection of the heart and soul of our city, offering an exciting day for all ages.”
